This Noren is decked out in decorations to commemorate the Gion Matsuri. The Sugimoto House (Sugimoto -ke) is a marvel of traditional Japanese machiya (townhouse) architecture. The building has been designated an Important Cultural Property. The house is a must-see anytime, but especially during yoi-yama, the celebrations that start a few days before the Gion Matsuri. One of Kyoto’s three major festivals, culminating in a huge costume parade on May 15th, leading from the Imperial palace to Shimogamo and Kamigamo shrine. This year, I watched the parade from Kamigamo shrine’s entrance. While I originally hoped to get a spot inside the shrine grounds, I realized that I was too late for any good camera spot with trees and the torii in the background. So instead I tried to focus on the individual participants rather than on the parade as such - due to the “contemporary background”. From a photographic point of view, this was quite some practice for me as somebody, who mostly shoots landscapes, temples, etc.

Formerly the Imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years, it is now the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture located in the Kansai region, as well as a major part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area. Kyoto is also known as the thousand-year capital.
